The Monastery of Saint Nikolaos Anapafsas:
|
The rock on which the monastery was built is relatively small and the surface is limited on the top. This affected the form and organisation of the buildings and the distribution of space in general, resulting in a multi-storey building. The carved staircase stops at the entrance as there is a small hall. On our way to the top, we come across the chapel of Saint Antonios and next to it the crypt. In the first floor there is a corridor at the right serving as a place for exhibiting things and at our left, there is the church. In the next floor and at the right there is another corridor with seats and the reception room with the fireplace. At the right there is the kitchen. Even further to the top, in the third and last floor, there is the old dining room, the chapel of Saint John the Baptist, the cistern and the cells. On the top of the rock stands the stone bell-tower. At the northeast side of the monastery hung two rows of wooden balconies with a magnificent view. The ossuary has been transferred below the monastery, in the cavity of a smaller rock. |
