HISTORICAL EVIDENCE
The first organised monastic communities go back to the first decades of the 14th century, according to remains of old frescoes in the chapel of Saint Antonios, as well as architectural evidence.

Adding to that, Athanasios the Meteorite (+1380) advises in his will his fellow hermits in Megalo Meteoron to elect their abbot taking into consideration the opinion of the abbot of Saint Nikolaos. This monastery is, in all probability, the Monastery of Saint Nikolaos Anapafsas.

What is more, a small monastery of Saint Nikolaos is mentioned in an official letter of 1392 / 93 which should be identified with the Monastery of Anapafsas.

In the first decade of the 16th century our monastery is completely restored and the church that stands there today was build around that time.

In 1888 there were five monks in the monastery.

In 1909 there was no monk and the monastery was almost ruined.

During the German and Italian occupation (1940-41) it was bombarded as well as many other monuments of this area.

Luckily, in the 1960s' the archaeological service started repairing and restoring the monastery, cleaning the frescoes at the same time and saving this monument in this way.
